With over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Christopher Butler has built a reputation for excellence in lighting and audio design across a wide range of productions. From intimate private shows with artists like Lady Gaga to overseeing the full-scale production of the Monterey Jazz Festival, he has worked in nearly every venue across Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. His resume also includes major corporate events such as Google I/O and large-scale productions throughout San Jose and the Bay Area.
Decades of Design, Direction, and Dedication
Christopher began his career at just 16, driven by a passion for experimenting with light and creating unforgettable visual experiences. That early curiosity evolved into a lifelong career spanning theatre, dance, concerts, corporate events, and festival production. His expertise lies not only in design but also in direction, production management, and leading both small teams and large-scale crews with precision and confidence.
From Big Sur to Big Stages
Christopher began his career as a lighting designer, driven by a passion for visual storytelling and immersive stage experiences. He got his start as the resident lighting designer in Big Sur, working out of the iconic Henry Miller Library and Fernwood Resort. These early, hands-on experiences laid the foundation for his creative and technical growth. Today, Christopher serves as a Technical Director, overseeing large-scale productions with a sharp eye for detail, seamless coordination, and artistic vision.
High-Profile Weddings, Expertly Lit
Christopher was honored to provide lighting design for two of Big Sur’s most high-profile and intimate celebrations — the weddings of Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman. Working closely with event planners and production teams, he created custom lighting environments that enhanced the natural beauty of Big Sur while delivering a sense of elegance and privacy. Each event required discreet execution, creative precision, and seamless coordination. These experiences further solidified his reputation as a trusted designer for exclusive, high-caliber events.

Behind-the-Scenes Support for TV—from Live to Scripted
Christopher Butler is an experienced production technician with a strong background in live television and scripted series. He served as Audio Technician for a number of years at the Panetta Institute's live broadcasts, and worked as Grip on Seasons 1 and 2 of HBO’s Big Little Lies. Fun Fact
When he’s not working an event, Christopher can be found grilling BBQ, casting a fishing line, or lighting up the sky with fireworks (outside of California). He’s passionate about spending time with family and friends, hosting dinner parties, and discovering new destinations.
